Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer Book Club Discussion Questions

This is the most practical book written on Christianity in modern times that I have ever read!

Practicing the Way

In the book of Acts in the New Testament of the Bible, Paul refers to Christianity as “the Way” three different times. There is a path that Jesus laid before us to follow Him in order that we may model our lives after His.

In Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer, Comer enlightens us with a very straightforward look at how we should follow Jesus in modern times. He walks us through the three goals we should set for ourselves as followers of “the Way”

  1. Be with Jesus

  2. Become like Him

  3. Do as He Did

Comer approaches these three goals with so much practical advice and wisdom. After he fleshes out what these goals look like, he ends the book with helping the reader to create a “Rule of Life” in order to establish daily, weekly, and monthly/seasonally/annual practices to help us walk in the Way.

What I Loved about Practicing the Way:

  • It was VERY practical with advice for practices and rhythms to incorporate into life to live like Jesus

  • Everything was backed up by scriptual references

  • He addresses topics that most Christians gloss over such as Sabbath, fasting and healing/miracles. (But not in a sensationalist way, if you know what I mean.)

  • It wasn’t legalistic at all and was far more about taking things away from our schedules versus simply adding more to them

  • He reiterates time and again that what we do isn’t our measure of success but how much love we have for others

  • The writing style is conversationalist and the format is almost like a blog or an email so that is felt like a quick read and anyone could read it!

  • He included a lot of quotes and commentary from Christian leaders and contemplatives that really speaks to the “academic Christians” so that the book still didn’t feel over simplified.

  • He created a website to help you build your own Rule of Life after finishing the book: Rule of Life Builder — Practicing the Way
